What's your leaf type?
Are you a 'bag-em up I don't want to see a single leaf on my property ever' type?? Or are you one with nature and prefer to let the leaves fall where they may? Do you remove leaves throughout the fall? Or do you prefer to wait until they all fall and do it all at once?
Whatever you prefer, we can help!
Like so many choices about lawncare and grass health, your preferences for leaf removal are a personal choice, and there's no one-size-fits-all exact method that works for everyone. Are there best practices? Kinda, but everyone's yard, grass, tree cover, budget and personal preferences are all different. And the weather and climate play a big role each year too!
Leaves have a biological reason for existing (duh), and nature is great at being really efficient. So yes, leaves contain all kinds of great nutrients that contribute to grass health.
And leaves can be great for your lawn if handled the right way! When you mulch or mow fallen leaves into smaller pieces and let them stay on the lawn, they act as a natural fertilizer and provide several benefits:
Nutrients: Leaves contain essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium that break down and enrich the soil, helping to feed the grass.
Organic Matter: As leaves decompose, they add organic matter to the soil, improving its structure, moisture retention, and microbial activity, which creates a healthier root environment for your grass.
Weed Prevention: A thin layer of mulched leaves can act as a natural weed suppressant by blocking sunlight, making it harder for weeds to grow.
Less Waste: Instead of bagging up leaves and sending them to a landfill, mulching them into the lawn recycles natural resources and saves effort.
But leaves can also smother a really nice lawn if they're on there too long or if it's too wet. And maybe you hate the way leaves look. Totally valid too.
So what's best for you? Give us a call and we can talk you through your options.
One time, full clean up at end of season. Might include some hauling, and some mulching as appropriate.
Continuation of regular mowing to mulch leaves as they fall.
2-3 'mini clean ups' that involve removing leaves from beds and other areas of the yard and mowing to mulch the leaves/removing some leaves where needed.
