Fall/Winter Pruning in Winchester, VA

2 min read

Fall is the time of year to set your yard up for success! Fall is a great time for a clean up or a refresh (and even mulch!), and often that includes Fall/Winter pruning. Fall/Winter pruning is different from Spring Pruning, but like Spring pruning, often requires the same level of knowledge, skill, attention to details.

One of the services that we've become well known for is our ability to prune thoughtfully and very specifically. All pruning is carefully, and often tediously, done by owner Nick - never left to members of our crews with other skill sets or those in training. It's one of his favorite types of jobs!

You'll never see a 'hack job' from us!!

What is Pruning?

Pruning is like a hair cut - yes, sometimes you get a cut to shape and style, but an expert stylist is also thinking about the health of your hair and cutting off an ideal amount of dead growth or length so that the rest of your hair can flourish!

Pruning helps stimulate growth by allowing a plant to put energy into new growth, rather than last year's dead growth.

Fall: Remove dead, diseased, broken, or hazardous branches; do light cleanup where appropriate.

Late winter: Do most structural and rejuvenation pruning on deciduous trees and shrubs that respond well to dormant pruning.

Benefits of fall/winter pruning

  • Better visibility: Once leaves drop, the structure of deciduous trees and shrubs is much easier to see.

  • Accuracy: Less risk of cutting areas that are actively starting to bloom.

  • Easier to identify dead or damaged wood: Dead branches stand out when foliage is gone.

  • Improved plant structure: You can remove crossing, rubbing, weak, or poorly positioned branches.

  • Encourages healthy spring growth: Proper dormant pruning directs the plant's energy toward desirable branches and buds.

  • Reduces disease spread: Many fungal and bacterial diseases are less active during the dormant season.

  • Less stress on the plant: Dormant plants generally experience less physiological stress from pruning than they would during active summer growth.

  • Easier access: Bare branches and dormant beds make pruning jobs easier and more efficient.

  • Storm preparation: Removing weak, damaged, or hazardous branches can reduce the risk of winter damage.
